Matt Goddard, a lifelong resident of Rockwood, Tennessee, is being remembered by family, friends, colleagues, and the broader community for a life marked by dedication, generosity, and a deep commitment to youth sports and public service.
Born on May 21, 1987, in Rockwood, he passed away on March 21, 2026, at the age of 38.
A proud graduate of Rockwood High School, Matt was known during his school years not only for his athletic ability but also for his leadership and team spirit.
He went on to attend Roane State Community College, where he continued to play baseball as a third baseman, further developing his love for the game that would remain central throughout his life.
Professionally, Matt dedicated 15 years of service to Rockwood Electric Utility, where he was recognized as a dependable and hardworking employee.
Beyond his career, he was an active and devoted member of First Presbyterian Church, Rockwood, where his faith and community involvement were evident in his daily life.
Matt’s greatest passion, however, was baseball and youth mentorship. After his playing days, he chose to give back to the sport and the community that shaped him.
He coached across Dixie Youth Baseball leagues and served as an assistant baseball coach for the Rockwood Middle School team. He also remained closely involved with local programs through Rockwood Parks and Recreation Department, where he contributed countless hours mentoring young athletes.
Known affectionately by many of the children he coached as “Coach Goddard,” Matt took pride in helping shape not only athletic skills but also character and confidence.
His influence extended well beyond the field, as he built lasting relationships with players and their families, becoming a trusted figure and role model in the community.
Matt shared a close and loving relationship with his family. He is survived by his fiancée, Morgan Tyler, and his children, Brantley Goddard, Axel Coaker, and Taelyn Moffitt.
He is also survived by his parents, Scott Goddard and Tricia Goddard, his siblings Chris Goddard and Olivia Corporan, his grandmother Willie Goddard, and several nieces, nephews, extended family members, and close friends who considered him part of their own families.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Vivian Gayle Collett Wyrick, as well as his grandparents, Franklin Goddard and Don and Faye Collett.
In addition to his devotion to family and community, Matt was known for his vibrant personality and love of music.
Friends recall his enthusiasm, his loyalty, and his ability to bring people together in moments of celebration, whether at community events, family gatherings, or informal get-togethers.
Services honoring Matt’s life will be held at Evans Mortuary. Visitation is scheduled for March 25, 2026, followed by a funeral service on March 26, 2026.
Interment will take place at Oak Grove Cemetery. The family has requested that, instead of flowers, memorial contributions be made to local youth baseball programs in Rockwood, reflecting Matt’s lifelong commitment to supporting young athletes.
Matt Goddard’s legacy is one of service, mentorship, and community impact.
His presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his influence will continue through the lives he touched, the players he coached, and the community he helped shape.
